Illiana Christian showed grit, speed, and flashes of timely hitting in Friday’s home matchup, battling throughout a 5–1 loss to Munster on May 22.
The Vikings kept the game tight early behind steady defense and confident pitching from freshman Grayce Scheeringa, who allowed just one earned run over five innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Her poise in the circle helped Illiana stay within reach through the middle innings.
Offensively, the Vikings produced quality at‑bats against one of the region’s toughest pitchers. Mya VanderWoude delivered Illiana’s biggest swing of the night, driving in the team’s lone run as part of a 1‑for‑3 performance. Cheyanne Colvin, Lauren Kreykes, and Addy Haitsma each added a hit, giving Illiana four total, matching Munster’s hit total through the first several innings.
Illiana also created pressure on the bases, showcasing one of the team’s strengths. The Vikings swiped four stolen bases, with Kreykes, Haitsma, VanderWoude, and Emmy Jansma each taking one. Defensively, Illiana committed just a handful of miscues and received clean fielding efforts from several underclassmen, reflecting the team’s growth and depth.
Despite the final score, Illiana’s young roster showed competitiveness, energy, and resilience—traits that continue to define the Vikings as they build toward postseason play.
