Illiana struck first in the opening frame of its softball game on May 28, building early momentum in a Class 3A sectional semifinal before Kankakee Valley rallied to end the Vikings’ season with a 4–3 decision.
Illiana opened the scoring in the first and continued its strong start in the second when Talia Boehrnsen drove in a run. The Vikings extended the lead to 3–1 in the third, capitalizing on steady contact and disciplined at‑bats that carried over from their sectional opener.
Kankakee Valley answered in the bottom of the third with the game’s turning point, pushing across three runs to take the lead for good. Patience Cole delivered the decisive swing with a two‑run double, and although Illiana continued to compete, the Vikings were unable to break through again against KV pitcher Mallorie Rose, who struck out 11 in a complete‑game effort.
Freshman Grayce Scheeringa kept Illiana within striking distance, working six innings and allowing four runs—three earned—on six hits while striking out four.
Boehrnsen and Lauren Mish each finished with two hits and one RBI, anchoring an offense that produced in each of the first three innings. Illiana also turned a double play defensively as the Vikings closed out a competitive postseason run.
