Mya VanderWoude delivered a clutch performance at the plate as Illiana Christian pulled away for a 5-1 win over Wheeler in a conference softball matchup.
The game took place April 13 at Wheeler High School, where the Vikings set the tone early and controlled the game behind timely hitting and steady pitching.
Illiana Christian jumped out to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning to immediately put pressure on Wheeler. The Vikings added another run in the fourth and one more in the fifth to extend their lead. VanderWoude led the offense with a home run and four RBIs, finishing 1-for-2 at the plate and making her impact count in key moments. Lauren Kreykes, Lauren Mish, Olivia Daliege and Sofia Dunnett each recorded two hits, helping Illiana Christian total nine hits and maintain consistent offensive pressure.
In the circle, freshman G. Scheeringa turned in a complete-game performance, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven. She kept Wheeler off balance throughout the game and limited scoring opportunities after the early innings.
Defensively, Illiana Christian committed just one error while maintaining control behind Scheeringa’s pitching. The Vikings’ ability to strike early and execute throughout the lineup helped secure the conference victory and build momentum moving forward this season.
